Cheap family meal ideas

Here are five family friendly meal ideas for under £20, thats £1 per portion and all the ingredients are from Aldi! AD.

Quick and easy meal ideas to feed your family this summer holiday on a budget.

I'm here to help you feed the family for less this summer!

With families feeling the pinch more than ever, i'm here to show you how with a bit of careful planning and good ingredients you can make 5 family meals from £20 worth of food from Aldi. I've even included a shopping list for you at the end.


1. Three Bean Chilli


What you'll need:


This is a super easy to make meal that you can prepare in less than 5 minutes, heres what you'll need:

  • 1 Onion, sliced

  • 1 Tin of black beans

  • 1 Tin of baked beans

  • 1 Tin of taco mixed beans

  • 2 tbsp chilli powder (more or less depending on preference)

  • Long grain rice

  • 1 Tin of chopped tomatoes

  • 1 Spring onion to garnish




How to cook

This is a super easy meal to prepare in the morning in the slow cooker

  1. Add the all the beans, tomatoes and onions to a slow cooker and give a good stir.

  2. Season to taste with salt, pepper and as much chilli powder as you like.

  3. Cook on a low heat for 6 hours.

  4. When ready, serve with some boiled rice and garnish with spring onions.


2. Potato and bacon tray bake


What you'll need:


This one tray recipe is really easy to cook and can easily be tailed to different ingredients.

  • 1 Onion, sliced into thick chunks

  • 2 Tomatos

  • 1 Pack of smoked bacon lardons

  • 4 Medium Eggs

  • 1/2 bag of Maris Piper potatoes

  • Baked beans to serve









How to cook

  1. Roughly chop the potatos with the skin on and cook in the oven for 20 minutes.

  2. Lightly fry the bacon in a frying pan until starting to crisp.

  3. Once the potatos are starting to brown, add the tomatoes, onions and bacon and return to the oven for a further 10 minutes.

  4. Remove from the oven and crack 4 eggs straight into the tray. Return to the oven for a further 2-3 minutes or until the eggs are cooked.

  5. Serve with baked beans!

3. Katsu chicken curry & egg fried rice


What you'll need:


This is the perfect Friday night dinner for all the family!

  • Aldi's breaded chicken steaks (4 pack)

  • Long grain rice

  • 1 Onion

  • 1 Medium Egg

  • Chinese curry sauce jar

  • Frozen mixed vegtables









How to cook

  1. Cook the chicken steaks according to the pack instructions in the airfryer or oven.

  2. Finely chop the onion and fry this in a small saucepan with a little oil.

  3. Cook the rice in a seperate pan, when cooked drain and set aside.

  4. Add the chinese curry sauce to the onions and cook on a very low heat for a few minutes, until warm.

  5. Beat a medium egg before adding it to a wok and stirring until scrambled. Add the cooked rice and frozen vegtables and stir fry for a few minutes.

  6. Add the egg fried vegtable rice to the plate and serve the chicken steaks sliced over the rice. Finish by adding the curry sauce to the top of the dish.



4. Cheese, bacon and potato pie


What you'll need:


One of my all time favourite family recipes, this reminds me of mealtimes as a child!

  • 1 Onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 Tomato

  • 1 Pack of smoked bacon lardons

  • Cheddar cheese, grated

  • 1/2 bag of Maris Piper potatoes

  • Mixed vegtables to serve









How to cook

  1. Peel and chop the potatos before adding to a saucepan and boiling until soft.

  2. In a sepreate frying pan add the bacon lardon and onions and fry until starting to crisp.

  3. Drain the potatos and mash with a splash of milk until smooth.

  4. Add the cheese, bacon and onions to the mashed potato and add to an ovenproof dish.

  5. Top with cheese and sliced tomatos, season with black pepper.

  6. Bake in the oven for around 20 minutes, or until starting to brown on top.

  7. Serve with frozen vegtables.

5. Cheeseburger pasta bake


What you'll need:


A super quick and easy mid week meal for all the family.

  • 2 Tomatos

  • 1 pack of Aldi's meat free frozen mince

  • 1 Onion

  • Cheddar cheese, grated

  • Pennee pasta

  • 1 tin of chopped tomatos









How to cook

  1. To a frying pan, add 1 onion finely chopped and the whole pack of Aldi's meat free frozen mince.

  2. Meanwhile boil the pasta in a seperate saucepan until al dente.

  3. Add the chopped fresh tomatoes to the frying pan with the onion and meat free mince and cook for a further minute.

  4. Add the pasta and half the cheese to the pan and give a good stir.

  5. Transfer to an ovenproof dish and top with the remaining cheese. Bake for 15 minutes or until the cheese begins to brown.
